a stitch in time

the boy held the scissors in his clenched fist
please, he said
as he looked at me through his one remaining eye
please

his other arm ended in a wooden peg
nobody had thought to cut off the straggling ends of thread
or add the stitch needed
to save the limb

his face had cracked open
in several places
whole areas had fallen away
to display a mesh beneath his skin
which should have held him together

please
he said
with the one word left
in his unravelling vocabulary
