A Reluctant House Buyer

First appeared in Down in the Cellar #5, Fall 2007.

All the walls have been dipped
in paint — now dried — there is
nothing much to deface around here.

He inspects the rooms, finds their corners
snug as those of an expensive coffin.
Under the beds and the dark brown couch,

a thin layer of dust interspersed
with a sheet of semi-darkness
sings. His fingers stray in, edges

closer to that special spot
under the couch, pets it,
lets the darkness lick his hand.
